How to pack fragile items for storage
There is a lot of nuance to the art of packing for storage. And when it comes to packing fragile items, there are some key things to be aware of. The following hints and tips are designed to provide you with the most important information you need on how to pack fragile items for storage.
Use right equipment
It is absolutely crucial that you use equipment that is fit for the job. In this case, it’s a good idea to invest in professional storage boxes and packing materials. Bubble wrap and sturdy, double corrugated boxes will offer optimum protection when compared to a box made from flimsy cardboard with some newspaper for padding.
There are a range of packing materials out there. But when you’re storing fragile items, it’s better to invest, rather than cut corners.
Get the foundations right
When packing boxes, it’s very important to create a solid foundation. You can do this in a number of ways. We recommend layering the bottom of your box with bubble wrap. And as always, it’s best to:
- Place the heaviest items on the bottom, with the lighter items on top
- Create layers of protection in your boxes by using partitions of cardboard
- It’s also a good idea to fill large air pockets that may be created by space between items. This will reduce bumping and jostling during transit, and ensure there is no inward collapse. Again, bubble wrap is your friend here, but it’s possible to use other materials (such as bedding, clothing and butcher’s paper) as well.
Another important usage of bubble wrap is perhaps the simplest. We suggest that you wrap individual items in bubble wrap before packing them away for storage. For instance, always wrap wine glasses individually, filling the goblet with bubble wrap, and carefully encasing the stem.
Don’t be shy about labelling
So, you’ve packed your items according to the advice we’ve laid out so far. There’s a few things left to do. The most important? Label your boxes as ‘Fragile’. It’s a good idea to have an arrow on the box, showing which way up the box should be carried and laid to rest. The point is to simply communicate that the boxes contain delicate goods so everyone knows to handle them with care.
